As part of the final response to Job, God shifts the focus of the conversation to the natural world. By presenting the massive wonders of creation, He highlights the severe limits of human understanding. The attention turns to a creature known as the Behemoth. The primary approach among commentators is that this is the proper name of a specific land animal, one that is larger and more massive than any other known beast [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא]. While some identify it as a wild ox [מצודת ציון] or possibly an elephant [אבן עזרא], others suggest it might be a general term for all massive beasts, though tradition firmly maintains it is a single, specific creature [רמב״ן, תקות אנוש]. According to a Midrashic perspective, it is a wondrous animal kept in reserve for the future [רש״י].
God emphasizes that He made this creature alongside humanity, highlighting a unique partnership in the physical world. Unlike the Leviathan, which rules the sea, this beast shares the dry land with humans [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ] and is composed of the same four basic natural elements [תקות אנוש]. It was created on the very same day as the first human [אבן עזרא], and has remained alive since the six days of creation [מצודת דוד].
Despite its massive size and incredibly long lifespan, this creature is not a predator. Instead, it sustains itself entirely on a vegetarian diet, eating grass just like common cattle [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא]. This detail serves as a powerful, twofold rebuke to Job. On a practical level, God challenges Job's capabilities. If a human cannot even control a passive, plant-eating animal, he certainly has no place claiming he can rule the world, subdue the wicked, or question the way God runs the universe [רמב״ן, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
On a deeper level, the very existence of such a colossal beast surviving solely on grass is a supernatural marvel. It requires constant, miraculous Divine supervision just to stay alive. If Job cannot figure out the mystery of a grass-eating giant, he is in no position to grasp the hidden secrets of Divine justice. Furthermore, the fact that God creates such overwhelmingly powerful creatures and successfully restrains them so they do not destroy the earth proves His absolute ability to watch over humanity, protect people, and ultimately reward the righteous [אלשיך, מצודת דוד].
