Deep within its natural habitat, surrounded by dense vegetation and flowing water, a massive beast finds its resting place. The primary approach among commentators is to view this setting as a straightforward physical description of the creature's shelter. Barren trees growing along the riverbanks form a thick canopy of reeds and swamp, casting a protective shade over the animal. At the same time, river willows encircle the beast from all sides, offering a secluded and secure hiding place.

However, other scholars read this scene as a rhetorical question designed to highlight the creature's incomprehensible size [מצודת דוד, אלשיך]. From this perspective, one must wonder if these trees could ever truly conceal such a giant. For an animal so enormous that it eats entire mountains, no ordinary canopy in the world could possibly provide adequate shade. The surrounding willows are nothing compared to it, and the sheer impossibility of covering the beast only magnifies its staggering dimensions.

Taking a completely different approach, a unique interpretation introduces a theme of death and finality [מלבי״ם]. Instead of a living creature seeking refuge from the sun, the shade here represents the shadow of what remains after the beast dies, namely its carcass and leftover bones. In this reading, the trees and river willows do not shelter a living giant. Rather, they cover and surround its remains there in the river, slowly concealing the creature until it is completely hidden from the eyes of all living things.
