איוב, פרק מ׳, פסוק כ״א

Job 40:21Sefaria

תַּֽחַת־צֶאֱלִ֥ים יִשְׁכָּ֑ב בְּסֵ֖תֶר קָנֶ֣ה וּבִצָּֽה׃

The resting place of a massive beast reveals much about its relationship with the natural world. The primary approach among commentators is that the creature settles deeply within its immediate surroundings, finding a place among heavy, shade-giving trees, tall vegetation growing along riverbanks, and the wet, muddy sludge of the marsh.

At first glance, this setting appears to be a natural, quiet resting spot. However, the sheer monstrous size of the creature challenges this simple picture. Some suggest that the creature's resting habits actually pose a rhetorical question about its immense scale. The beast is so gigantic that no tree in the world is large enough to truly cover it. Therefore, it does not survive the burning heat of the sun by hiding in the shade or the swamp. Instead, it endures solely through the direct providence of God ([מצודת דוד]).

Building on the idea of its incredible strength, another perspective suggests that the beast simply does not need shade to protect itself from the sun. When it chooses to lie in the swampy waters, it does so because its body is so remarkably tough that the constant, heavy moisture of the mud cannot cause it any harm ([אלשיך]).

Taking a completely different approach, a unique interpretation shifts the focus away from the living habits of the creature. Rather than describing its daily resting spot, this view explains that the heavy shade, the hidden river reeds, and the thick mud actually depict the creature's final state after death. These isolated, overgrown areas are the hidden, covered places where its colossal carcass will ultimately be cast away ([מלבי״ם]).
