In contrast, another perspective suggests the imagery is of digging a pit and setting a trap in a desperate attempt to capture the beast [רש״י]. There are differing views on the identity of the group attempting this feat. One opinion suggests they are sorcerers and magicians, trying to use mystical arts to draw the massive creature out of the ocean to hunt it [רש״י, מצודות, אלשיך]. On the other hand, different commentators identify this group as associations of merchants or ordinary people gathering together to feast on its meat [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. Another interpretation views them as a gang of thieves who have joined forces for this impossible task [אבן עזרא].
