Job 40:12Sefaria

רְאֵ֣ה כׇל־גֵּ֭אֶה הַכְנִיעֵ֑הוּ וַהֲדֹ֖ךְ רְשָׁעִ֣ים תַּחְתָּֽם׃

God continues His challenge to Job, testing whether he truly possesses the power and authority to govern the world and bring exact justice to the wicked. Earlier, Job had complained about arrogant, corrupt people who seem to live highly successful lives. Now, God directs Job to look closely at these individuals and bring them down [אלשיך]. These proud figures are not merely boastful; they are active rebels against God who hold onto power and rule like kings [רמב״ן]. The challenge requires more than just an external defeat. Job is tasked with breaking their pride so completely that they surrender deep within their hearts [מלבי״ם]. To further illustrate the sheer scale of such immense pride, God later points to two massive creatures: the Behemoth on land and the Leviathan in the sea [אבן עזרא].

Following the demand to humble the proud, Job is challenged to completely crush the wicked. The primary approach among commentators is that this action represents a thorough trampling and breaking. It is compared to the intense, grinding pressure used to crush spices in a mortar [רש״י, רמב״ן].

There are different perspectives on exactly how and where this intense punishment should take place. One approach suggests that the wicked must be shattered precisely where they stand, perhaps even through the sheer force of a spoken command [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, רמב״ן]. Another viewpoint explains that they should be driven deep into the ground, trampled into the very dust beneath their feet, and locked away in a place from which no one can rescue them [רמב״ן, תקות אנוש]. Ultimately, the true purpose of this humbling and crushing is the complete elimination of evil. Once their power and pride are entirely removed, the wicked will no longer have any ability to corrupt the world or cause harm to others [מלבי״ם].
