Job 40:11Sefaria

הָ֭פֵץ עֶבְר֣וֹת אַפֶּ֑ךָ וּרְאֵ֥ה כׇל־גֵּ֝אֶ֗ה וְהַשְׁפִּילֵֽהוּ׃

God issues a profound challenge to Job, daring him to demonstrate supreme power and absolute justice by unleashing his fury to subdue the arrogant forces of the world. Job is called to scatter his intense rage across the earth. This anger is described in deeply physical terms, reflecting how intense emotion visibly flares in a person's face and nostrils [אבן עזרא]. This concept is sometimes understood quite literally as the physical flaring of the nose in moments of deep wrath [רמב״ן].

The nature of this fury operates on multiple levels. It can be seen as an overwhelming, destructive anger so potent that it risks harming the innocent. To prevent such unintended harm, the focus must immediately turn to a highly specific target [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, this rage is understood not just as an emotion, but as actual spiritual forces. In this view, the anger manifests as destructive agents and punishing angels. Each of these forces commands its own army, waiting to be deployed across the globe [אלשיך].

The ultimate purpose of unleashing this intense power is to seek out and humble the proud. Job is challenged to identify arrogant and wicked individuals, punish them, and bring them low. Taking such decisive action against wickedness is presented as the hallmark of a completely righteous person [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, this act of humbling is not limited to humanity. It extends to every living creature, whether human or animal, that uses its superior strength to dominate others. The final goal of this divine challenge is to completely subdue any arrogant power, leaving the once-proud oppressors weak and powerless [מלבי״ם].
