Following a massive victory over the coalition of Amorite kings, achieved through both conventional warfare and miracles from God, Joshua completed the conquest of their royal cities. The only exceptions to this sweeping victory were Jerusalem and possibly Jarmuth. The military campaign then shifted into a systematic takeover of the smaller surrounding cities, capturing them one by one.

This sustained success was largely made possible by the political landscape of the region. The Canaanite kings were numerous and tended to isolate themselves from one another due to their diverse origins. This lack of unity made it much easier for the Israelites to defeat them [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

At the conclusion of this lengthy campaign, Joshua returned to the camp at Gilgal. The mention of this return does not describe a new event in the timeline. Rather, it simply repeats the details of the exact same return journey that was already noted earlier in the narrative [מצודת דוד].
