As Joshua prepared to face a massive coalition of enemy armies, he carried a heavy burden of doubt. The divine assurance he received moments before the battle was meant to calm a deep-seated anxiety. His dread was not merely a natural reaction to the overwhelming size of the opposing forces, but a profound spiritual concern. Joshua worried that he had sinned by forging a treaty with the Gibeonites without first seeking guidance from God. He feared this misstep might cost him the upcoming battle [חומת אנך].

To dispel these doubts, God assures Joshua that the victory has already been sealed. The very formation of this vast enemy alliance is a deliberate act of God, orchestrated specifically to deliver them directly into the hands of the Israelites [מלבי״ם]. The physical battle is simply the final step of a victory that has already occurred, as the spiritual representatives of these enemy nations have already been completely subdued in the heavenly realms [חומת אנך].

The outcome on the ground is therefore guaranteed. While the enemy soldiers will certainly arrive and take their positions for war, their presence will be short-lived. They will be entirely unable to hold their ground or remain standing. The moment they encounter Joshua and his army, their strength will collapse, and they will immediately fall in complete defeat [מלבי״ם].
