The division of land among the tribes involved careful allocation, especially for those settling outside the primary borders of Canaan. On the eastern side of the Jordan River, the tribe of Manasseh received extensive territories that once belonged to the kingdom of Og in the Bashan. This specific allocation included the northern half of the Gilead region [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
These northern lands, along with the former royal cities of Ashtaroth and Edrei, were assigned to the descendants of Machir. However, a clear distinction is made regarding this family's settlement. The eastern territories were not granted to all of Machir's descendants, but strictly to half of them [מצודת דוד]. This division occurred because the remaining half of the family, known as the children of Gilead and consisting of six ancestral households, received their property on the western side of the Jordan River, settling directly within the borders of Canaan itself [רד״ק].
