שופטים, פרק ו׳, פסוק כ״ג

Judges 6:23Sefaria

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ל֧וֹ יְהֹוָ֛ה שָׁל֥וֹם לְךָ֖ אַל־תִּירָ֑א לֹ֖א תָּמֽוּת׃

Gideon is struck by a sudden, terrifying realization: he has just encountered a heavenly being face-to-face. This overwhelming experience fills him with a deep fear for his life. In response to his internal panic, a divine message of comfort arrives to calm his spirit and guarantee his survival. Since the heavenly messenger had already vanished from sight, a question arises regarding how this message actually reached Gideon. One perspective suggests that as the angel ascended to the heavens, he noticed Gideon's terror and called out to him from above [רד״ק]. Another approach proposes that the angel specifically returned to Gideon simply to deliver these reassuring words [רלב״ג].

The core of this comforting message centers on the concept of peace, which serves as the absolute opposite of death. Death is the result of conflict and separation between the physical body and the soul. Peace, however, reflects complete harmony within the body and a perfect balance between the material and the spiritual. It was precisely this profound inner peace that allowed Gideon to experience a prophetic vision and perceive the heavenly being in the first place, as his physical nature did not block his spiritual sight [מלבי״ם].

Flowing from this state of perfect harmony is the promise that he will not die. This guarantee offers a double layer of protection. It ensures his physical survival while also securing his spiritual life, indicating that his past wrongdoings have been forgiven [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, this deeply personal reassurance of peace is not an isolated event. It is part of a much larger divine plan. Gideon's individual rescue is directly tied to God's deep mercy and the broader, future salvation destined for the entire nation of Israel [חומת אנך].
