שופטים, פרק ו׳, פסוק י״ב

Judges 6:12Sefaria

In a time of intense danger, a simple man labors in secret to hide his harvest from the enemy. Suddenly, he experiences a life-altering revelation. This encounter does not happen in a dream or a prophetic vision. Instead, it occurs while he is completely awake, as an angel takes on a human form and enters the physical world [אברבנאל].

At first, the angel simply sits and waits under a nearby oak tree. However, because Gideon is so deeply absorbed in his work that he does not notice the visitor, the angel moves to stand directly in his line of sight [אברבנאל]. This sudden appearance is meant to draw Gideon out of his isolation and prepare his mind to receive the word of God [אלשיך]. The timing of this visit is far from random. It happens precisely because Gideon is actively fulfilling the commandment to honor his father. By taking on the dangerous task of beating the wheat to protect his elderly father from risk, Gideon proves his character and shows that he is truly worthy of becoming the one to redeem the Israelites [אברבנאל].

When the angel finally speaks, he addresses Gideon as a mighty warrior, using words that convey deep power and strength [מצודת ציון]. This greeting is intended to bring good news, lift Gideon's spirits, and plant within him the firm belief that he has the ability to overcome and defeat the Midianite threat [רד״ק]. The angel informs him that God has granted him a unique physical and spiritual strength [רש״י], and that He will continue to pour out upon him an abundance of merit, holiness, and bravery [מלבי״ם]. The core of this blessing is the assurance that God stands beside him like a fellow warrior, ready to fight the enemies that terrorize them. Through these words, Gideon is supposed to realize that he is being chosen and sent to strike down the Midianites [אלשיך].

Despite the angel's clear message, a significant gap in understanding arises regarding the promise that God is with him. The angel is speaking about the future, promising that God will be with Gideon to save Israel through his leadership. Gideon, on the other hand, interprets the statement in the present tense. He is left completely baffled, wondering how it is possible that God is currently with them when they are suffering through so many terrible troubles. This confusion is compounded by the fact that, at this point, Gideon has no idea he is speaking to a heavenly being. He simply assumes the figure standing before him is a regular human prophet who has come to rebuke the nation [אברבנאל].
