Judges 6:22Sefaria

A sudden moment of revelation transforms doubt into sheer terror. Up until this point, Gideon was uncertain about the stranger's true nature, prompting him to ask for proof to confirm the identity of his mysterious guest [מצודת דוד]. However, the realization finally hits him that this is no ordinary prophet or earthly messenger. Instead, he is looking at a purely spiritual being that carries the very presence of God [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. This sudden clarity may have dawned on him at the exact moment the visitor vanished. By shedding his physical human appearance, the visitor revealed his true, unearthly nature, something a living person is not meant to witness [מלבי״ם].

Overwhelmed by a deep dread for his own life, Gideon lets out a sudden wail of panic and anxiety about what is about to happen [רש״י, מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. He explains that his overwhelming fear is a direct result of looking at this heavenly being face to face [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that this panic came from a well-known belief that a mortal human cannot look upon a divine entity and survive. Witnessing the power of God within the angel made Gideon immediately assume his end had arrived [שטיינזלץ, אלשיך].

A deeper perspective suggests that the sheer ability of a physical human being to perceive an abstract, spiritual entity means the person's soul is already preparing to leave the physical body. Gideon believed that such a crossing of worlds, where the spiritual soul can clearly see another spiritual being, only happens in the final moments before death. Because of this, he was absolutely certain his life was over [מלבי״ם].
