שופטים, פרק ו׳, פסוק ט״ז

Judges 6:16Sefaria

A leader's deepest doubts are often met with profound divine reassurance. Faced with an overwhelming threat, Gideon receives a promise of absolute, supernatural victory, a guarantee rooted entirely in his own humility. The message is delivered by an angel speaking in God's name, which explains why Gideon subsequently asks for a sign to verify the authenticity of the divine mission [רד״ק]. The promise of God's presence serves as a direct reward for his modest nature. When addressed earlier as a brave warrior, Gideon did not let pride take over. Instead, he pointed out his low status and youth. Because God chooses to dwell with the humble, Gideon earns the ultimate guarantee of divine companionship [חומת אנך].

This divine presence carries two practical benefits for the upcoming conflict. First, it ensures that the entire nation will naturally respect Gideon's leadership and obey his commands [מצודת דוד]. Second, the salvation will unfold through miraculous means rather than through the strength of a massive army [מלבי״ם]. With God standing by his side, conventional military power becomes unnecessary. His presence alone is completely sufficient to secure the win [אלשיך].

The assurance of defeating a vast enemy nation is framed as though the Israelites will be fighting just one individual. In a typical war against a large force, soldiers actively defend and support one another. A solitary person, however, stands completely helpless. God guarantees that He will first subdue the enemy's spiritual guardian in heaven. Stripped of all spiritual protection and mutual support, the opposing nation will become as vulnerable and easy to defeat as a lone man with no one to help him [אלשיך]. As a result, the final strike against the enemy will happen with remarkable speed and ease [מצודת דוד].
