Instead of a typical military campaign aimed at political conquest and rule, the enemies of Israel launched a massive, destructive raid. Their primary intention was robbery, looting, and utter ruin [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל]. These invaders did not arrive on horseback for a quick and light strike. Rather, they brought along their families, their herds, and an unimaginable number of camels with the express purpose of consuming the land's resources and stealing any animals they could find [אברבנאל].

The presence of their livestock was a deliberate tactic. The invaders intentionally allowed their animals to graze freely on the agricultural produce, completely destroying the seeds that had been carefully planted in the fields [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. While the grazing herds devastated the crops, the desert nomads set up their tents and personally raided the Israelites [מלבי״ם].

The sheer volume of these invaders was overwhelming, resembling a massive swarm of locusts in its incomprehensible numbers [מצודת ציון]. This combined swarm of humans and animals had one unified goal: the absolute destruction of the land. The resulting devastation became so unbearable that it ultimately pushed the Israelites to cry out to God for help [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].
