The king is in good spirits, creating the perfect opportunity for such a heavy conversation. Seated beside the king is the queen. The primary approach among commentators is that this simply refers to the king's legal wife [רלב״ג, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון]. However, another perspective identifies this royal figure as Queen Esther, the mother of King Darius. According to this view, Esther is present at the meal and actively drives the conversation forward out of a deep love for her people and homeland, effectively joining the king in his questioning [מלבי״ם].

The discussion quickly turns to the practical details of the planned journey. The king asks for specifics, wanting to know when the trip will begin, how long the travel and the stay in Jerusalem will last, and when Nehemiah intends to return to his royal duties [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The sequence of the exchange reveals a striking detail about the king's reaction. He approves the request and grants permission to leave immediately, even before Nehemiah has a chance to calculate and provide an exact timeline. It is only after receiving this immediate, in-principle approval that Nehemiah answers the king's initial question, setting a definitive date for his return [מלבי״ם].
