Returning from battle is often a time of chaos and greed, but the aftermath of this conflict is marked by extraordinary order and discipline. The warriors arrive at the plains of Moab carrying everything they captured, presenting it directly to the leadership of the Israelites.

Instead of dividing the captured goods among themselves on the battlefield, the returning fighters bring everything straight to Moses and Eleazar the Priest. This action highlights the high moral character of the soldiers. They completely avoid looting and do not take a single item for themselves without permission. Such remarkable restraint reveals that even the men of war among the people were deeply righteous individuals [רבנו בחיי].

The gains brought back from the war fall into three distinct categories. The first group consists of the human captives taken during the conflict. The second includes the captured animals. The third category encompasses all the inanimate objects and movable goods gathered from the enemy [רשב״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ], though some understand this final group to refer specifically to captured clothing [אבן עזרא].

Upon reaching the plains of Moab with these vast gains, the soldiers maintain their disciplined approach. Rather than marching directly into the main camp of the Israelites, they set up their own camp just outside of it [העמק דבר].
