פרשת מטות

Numbers 31:54Sefaria

וַיִּקַּ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֜ה וְאֶלְעָזָ֤ר הַכֹּהֵן֙ אֶת־הַזָּהָ֔ב מֵאֵ֛ת שָׂרֵ֥י הָאֲלָפִ֖ים וְהַמֵּא֑וֹת וַיָּבִ֤אוּ אֹתוֹ֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד זִכָּר֥וֹן לִבְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לִפְנֵ֥י יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

The final act of the war against Midian transforms captured physical wealth into a lasting source of atonement, memory, and holiness for the entire nation. The process of gathering the spoils took place in two distinct stages. Initially, the military officers weighed the gold and presented it to Moses [ספורנו]. Afterward, the metal was melted down and refined into a single solid block. This concentrated piece was then brought to Moses a second time, not by the entire group of officers, but by a single representative acting on behalf of them all [העמק דבר, ברכת אשר על התורה].

Once brought to the Tabernacle, the gold was not merely placed in the treasury to be kept for general future needs [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Instead, it served a much greater purpose. The gold was crafted into holy vessels designed for public use in the worship of God for generations [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך, העמק דבר]. Because these new vessels were used regularly by the entire nation, the donation became a lasting memorial for all the Israelites, rather than a private tribute to the officers who donated it [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך].

The essential purpose of this memorial in the service of God was to awaken mercy and forgiveness for the people [אם למקרא]. More specifically, it acted as a direct atonement for the nation's previous sin of Baal Peor [ספורנו].

The lasting memory of the Israelites before God also highlights the extraordinary spiritual greatness of the soldiers. Throughout the conflict, these officers maintained absolute purity and actively avoided any sinful thoughts. When the time came to collect jewelry from the Midianite women, the soldiers even smeared their own faces with mud and dirt to prevent themselves from looking at them. A person who distances himself from sin to such an extreme degree reaches a spiritual level that makes him worthy of standing before God and offering a sacrifice, much like a High Priest. It is this remarkable devotion and purity that was forever etched into the spiritual memory of the nation [אור החיים].
