Numbers 31:5Sefaria

The impending battle against Midian demands rapid national organization, resulting in the assembly of an elite and representative military force drawn from every segment of the population. The unique method used to recruit these warriors reveals both the profound nature of their mission and the deeply complex relationship between the Israelites and their leader.

The primary approach among commentators views this recruitment as a deliberate process of selection and appointment Each tribe carefully chose one thousand representatives, delivering them to Moses so they could act as emissaries for the entire nation in this vital duty By serving as public representatives, the soldiers elevated the mission, since a commandment performed with the participation of the broader community carries greater merit [העמק דבר].

Conversely, another perspective suggests that the soldiers did not volunteer but were instead enlisted passively or against their will This reluctance did not stem from a fear of battle, but rather from a fierce love for Moses. God had informed Moses that immediately after the campaign against Midian, his life would come to an end. Upon hearing this decree, the Israelites refused to go to war, desperately hoping to delay the death of their leader. As a result, they had to be drafted by force or chosen by lottery

This hesitation serves as a great tribute to the people, highlighting their profound bond with Moses. During earlier moments of crisis, the nation had complained bitterly and even threatened to stone him, yet now they simply could not bear to part with him [רש״י]. This shift in attitude occurs because when a true leader rebukes his people, it often sparks temporary resentment. However, as his departure from the world draws near, the public finally recognizes his true greatness and understands that all his harsh words were ultimately for their own benefit [חתם סופר]. Because the entire nation had reached such a high spiritual level, no one was willing to volunteer and hasten the end of Moses's life, making external intervention necessary to assemble the army [גור אריה].

The men selected for this task were not merely a numerical quota; they were the most honorable, elite, and righteous individuals in the nation [הכתב והקבלה]. Driven by immense righteousness and humility, these men shied away from the spotlight and refused to put themselves forward, forcing others to point them out and assign them to the mission [מלבי״ם]. Marching into battle against a massive nation like Midian with a small force of only twelve thousand men required extraordinary courage. Ultimately, these soldiers displayed absolute self-sacrifice, risking their lives for the sanctity of God's name and the physical salvation of Israel
