משלי, פרק ל״א, פסוק י״ב

Proverbs 31:12Sefaria

גְּמָלַ֣תְהוּ ט֣וֹב וְלֹא־רָ֑ע כֹּ֝֗ל יְמֵ֣י חַיֶּֽיהָ׃

True devotion in a relationship is tested not during moments of comfort and peace, but through extreme circumstances, the passage of time, and profound challenges. The woman of valor stands apart because her kindness is absolute and unconditional. She repays her husband with unwavering goodness, a direct response to the deep trust he places in her [אבן עזרא].

The primary approach among commentators is that this extraordinary goodness holds firm even under the most difficult conditions. If her husband acts wrongly toward her or causes her harm, she refuses to seek revenge. Instead of returning hardship for hardship, she continues to offer him only good [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי, אמרי דעת]. This deep dedication is further reflected in her humble support of his work [רלב״ג]. Her commitment remains steady even through long periods of separation. If her husband leaves home for many years, or even for his entire life, to dedicate himself to studying Torah, she harbors no anger. She never repays him with bitterness for leaving her alone [אלשיך].

Furthermore, her kindness possesses a rare, lifelong stability. While others might show warmth in their youth but grow bitter in old age, or change their behavior when faced with poverty, she maintains her goodness without a single shift throughout her entire life [מלבי״ם].

On a deeper, symbolic level, this dynamic mirrors the connection between the human soul and the intellect. The woman represents the good soul, while the husband represents the power of the mind. Most souls struggle, swaying back and forth between good and evil, often only managing to overcome their negative desires in old age. The pure soul, however, acts only with goodness. It consistently avoids evil and performs good deeds, ensuring that the intellect becomes completely worthy of receiving a good reward without facing any punishment [מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי].
