Proverbs 31:20Sefaria

A true woman of character is known not only by her hard work in caring for her family but also by her deep generosity and sensitivity toward the vulnerable. Although she works hard and earns her own money, she is not possessive. Instead of hoarding her wealth for personal pleasure, she carefully sets aside a portion of her profits to support those in need The greatness of her charity is amplified because she gives from the fruits of her own personal labor Additionally, she offers food that is already prepared and ready to eat, providing immediate comfort and relief [חומת אנך].

Her generosity is expansive. She opens her hand fully [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי, ביאור שטיינזלץ] and slices bread for the hungry [אבן עזרא]. She does not wait for a desperate person to beg. Instead, she takes the initiative, silently offering help without any unnecessary words [אלשיך].

She carefully tailors her approach based on the specific situation of the person in need, distinguishing between someone who is poor and someone who is completely needy and has absolutely nothing When helping a poor person, she extends one hand. However, when faced with a needy person who is starving and desperate, she urgently reaches out with both hands to provide double the assistance without delay

She is also deeply mindful of the recipient's dignity. If a poor person comes to her door, she hands the food to him directly [עמנואל הרומי]. Yet, if a needy person is too ashamed to beg and suffers silently at home, she reaches out to him [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ] or discreetly sends prepared meals to his house to spare him any embarrassment [חומת אנך, עמנואל הרומי]. She maintains careful boundaries as well. With a poor person, she opens her hand so he can take the food himself, avoiding any improper closeness or suspicion. But if a needy person is actively starving, she places the food directly into his hands to save his life immediately [אלשיך].

Beyond the physical act of giving, this generosity serves as a spiritual metaphor. The poor person represents someone who embraces a life of hardship and sacrifice for the sake of studying Torah [רש״י]. On a deeper level, it reflects the soul striving for spiritual success. The soul supports the human intellect, which is compared to the poor and needy, by feeding it the wisdom and service of God so that it may reach its ultimate, perfected purpose [עמנואל הרומי].
