Proverbs 31:28Sefaria

קָ֣מוּ בָ֭נֶיהָ וַֽיְאַשְּׁר֑וּהָ בַּ֝עְלָ֗הּ וַֽיְהַלְלָֽהּ׃

In the familiarity of the home, family members are often the first to notice flaws and offer criticism. Yet, the most profound proof of a remarkable woman's greatness comes from those who know her intimately. Her relatives, witnessing her true character behind closed doors, are spontaneously moved to praise her [עמנואל הרומי]. The act of her children standing up represents a deep, internal awakening to acknowledge her deeds [מצודת ציון]. On a practical level, they wake up in the morning and see that her tireless work is still ongoing, a continuation of her efforts from the night before [אבן עזרא]. From a developmental perspective, this physical rising symbolizes their growth into adulthood. Only when the children mature and acquire their own wisdom and virtues can they fully appreciate their mother's true value [אלשיך].

Driven by this realization, they validate her choices, praising her for walking a straight and moral path [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The very fact that these children possess good character and sound judgment serves as a living testimony to the mother who raised them. By following the path she paved, they multiply her reward and bring her true happiness.

There is a distinct difference in how the children and the husband express their admiration. The children confirm her spiritual joy and her ultimate reward in the World to Come, while the husband focuses his praise on her tangible accomplishments in this world [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. His admiration is ultimately expressed by declaring that while many women have achieved greatness, she surpasses them all [עמנואל הרומי, אבן עזרא].

On a spiritual level, this dynamic reflects a woman who dedicates her life and resources to support her husband's Torah study while raising her children to practice kindness and charity [אלשיך]. Allegorically, the children represent the community of students and Torah scholars, while the husband represents God [רש״י]. From a philosophical standpoint, the narrative describes the soul's pursuit of genuine success. In this framework, the children symbolize good deeds, students, or the proper functioning of the soul's inner forces. The husband represents the intellect, which praises the soul for creating an environment that allows for uninterrupted study and contemplation [מלבי״ם, עמנואל הרומי].
