משלי, פרק ל״א, פסוק כ״ו

Proverbs 31:26Sefaria

פִּ֭יהָ פָּתְחָ֣ה בְחׇכְמָ֑ה וְת֥וֹרַת חֶ֝֗סֶד עַל־לְשׁוֹנָֽהּ׃

The ideal character is defined by a precise balance between deep intellect and profound compassion. Speech is never empty; rather, it carries practical wisdom and spiritual weight, positively influencing everyone around it. According to tradition, this exemplary model of communication and grace is embodied by Serah, the daughter of Asher [חומת אנך].

On a practical level, this mastery of speech means avoiding nonsense, unnecessary chatter, or loud outbursts in public. Every spoken word is measured, intelligent, and filled with understanding [מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, personal intellect alone is not enough. This wisdom is actively paired with a doctrine of love and giving, constantly encouraging others to perform acts of kindness for one another [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, עמנואל הרומי].

This dual approach also reflects a specific method for distributing charity. Support is first directed toward scholars who dedicate themselves to divine wisdom. Afterward, the giving expands into pure, unconditional kindness, reaching every person regardless of their knowledge or background [אלשיך].

On a spiritual level, this balance serves as a metaphor for the human soul striving for eternal success. Such a soul is careful to speak only of divine wisdom. The kindness associated with this speech is God's teaching itself, which is a tremendous gift designed to grant humanity life in both this world and the world to come [עמנואל הרומי]. Furthermore, through elevated speech, a person can reveal and explain the wondrous kindness of God that is reflected throughout all of creation [רלב״ג].

Looking toward the end of life, these qualities become crucial when a person stands before God on the Day of Judgment. The wisdom a person used to navigate life, along with the kindness they performed beyond the strict letter of the law, will serve as their greatest advocates. In this framework, the physical faculties of speech take on deeper meaning. The mouth represents the wisdom needed to distinguish between good and evil, while the tongue represents deeper understanding. Through this profound understanding, the hidden mysteries of God's teachings are revealed. These deeper truths are characterized by kindness because they flow from a spiritual abundance and a level of devotion that far exceed basic requirements and strict judgment [מלבי״ם].
