תהלים, פרק ק״ה, פסוק ל׳

Psalms 105:30Sefaria

שָׁרַ֣ץ אַרְצָ֣ם צְפַרְדְּעִ֑ים בְּ֝חַדְרֵ֗י מַלְכֵיהֶֽם׃

The plague of frogs in Egypt was an event of uncontrollable expansion, where water creatures rapidly multiplied and overtook the entire nation. God Himself brought about this massive birthing process, causing the animals to swarm relentlessly [מאירי, מצודת ציון]. While other records highlight the river as the source of the frogs, the primary approach among commentators is that the plague emerged from all the waters across the Egyptian territory. Wherever there were rivers, lakes, or pools of standing water, frogs swarmed outward to cover the area.

However, another perspective suggests that the physical ground itself literally birthed the swarm. According to this view, the frogs did not merely migrate from the water onto dry land. Instead, they rose from the deep earth, breaking straight through the solid floors of Egyptian homes [אלשיך].

The sheer inescapable nature of this plague was most evident in its penetration of the highest and most protected levels of the Egyptian government. The creatures spread into every conceivable space, eventually invading the private royal bedrooms [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. This relentless invasion highlights the miraculous nature of the event. Even if the rulers tightly locked the doors of their inner chambers to keep the outside world at bay, their efforts were entirely useless. Because their private rooms were far from the river, the kings might have felt secure, but the frogs simply breached the locked chambers by rising directly from the ground inside [אלשיך].
