תהלים, פרק ק״ה, פסוק מ׳

Psalms 105:40Sefaria

שָׁ֭אַל וַיָּבֵ֣א שְׂלָ֑ו וְלֶ֥חֶם שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם יַשְׂבִּיעֵֽם׃

God's care in the wilderness was clearly seen through the miraculous food He provided in response to the people's needs. When considering who actually made the plea for this sustenance, the primary approach among commentators is that the Israelites themselves asked for meat and bread while journeying through the wilderness of Zin. However, another perspective suggests that it was Moses who presented this request to God on behalf of the nation [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In response to their plea, God supplied exactly what they desired. He sent them quail, a type of fat bird [מצודת ציון], alongside the bread of heaven, which commentators universally identify as the Manna. A clear distinction exists between how these two types of food were given and experienced. The quail was provided in the evening on a temporary basis and was intended merely for eating. In contrast, the Manna was given in the morning with the specific purpose of providing complete and lasting satisfaction [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, מאירי].

This contrast between eating the physical meat and being fully satisfied by the Manna points to a profound spiritual transformation within the people. In the natural world, physical food satisfies a hungry person, while spiritual nourishment is not meant to fill an empty stomach. Yet, in the wilderness, the exact opposite occurred. The physical meat they consumed did not bring them true satisfaction; rather, it was the spiritual bread descending from heaven that thoroughly satisfied their physical hunger. This miraculous reversal reveals God's deep affection for the Israelites, as He elevated them to the spiritual level of ministering angels, whose sustenance and satisfaction come entirely from spiritual food [אלשיך].
