Psalms 105:19Sefaria

Joseph's extended time in prison was not a random misfortune but a carefully timed divine plan. He was meant to remain in captivity until a specific moment arrived. Commentators offer different perspectives on what exactly needed to happen to trigger his release. One approach suggests that the timing was dictated by God's master plan, specifically the predetermined moment to bring the Israelites down into Egypt [רש"י], or the awakening of the divine promise to protect Jacob's family [מלבי"ם]. Furthermore, this waiting period served as a heavenly trial. Joseph’s imprisonment was extended by two years as a consequence of placing his trust in the chief cupbearer rather than relying entirely on God Alternatively, another perspective focuses on Joseph's own predictions. He had to wait in captivity until the interpretation he gave to the cupbearer's dream actually came true, which eventually led to his name being mentioned and his summons before Pharaoh

During this waiting period, Joseph underwent a profound process of testing and purification, much like silver being refined in a fire to remove its impurities. This refining process is understood in two complementary ways. The first focuses on Joseph's personal growth. His suffering in prison acted as a crucible designed to test his righteousness. The hardships he endured cleansed him of his past missteps and elevated him after he successfully resisted the intense temptation involving Potiphar's wife The second approach highlights the perfection of the wisdom God granted him. When the time finally came for Joseph to stand before Pharaoh, the dream interpretation he offered was pure, flawless, and exact. Guided by divine providence, his words were completely free of error, much like perfectly refined silver
