The gift of a homeland and the outpouring of divine kindness upon the Israelites were never intended as unconditional rewards. Instead, these blessings carry a clear and demanding purpose. The prosperity granted to the forefathers and their descendants was designed to serve as a foundation, enabling them to live a life of faith and fulfill God's commandments. The primary approach among commentators is that all the goodness and the inheritance of the land were given strictly on the condition that the nation would observe God's laws [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The selection of the Israelites originated from the spiritual perfection of their ancestors, and this chosen status remains active for future generations only as long as they continue to follow in those ancestral footsteps [מאירי]. Ultimately, this fulfills the original promise made to Abraham, ensuring that God would truly be their God [אבן עזרא]. The obligation to maintain these laws involves different levels of dedication. While standard statutes require general observance, the deeper teachings and core tenets of faith demand a much higher, more rigorous degree of protection and care [מלבי״ם].

Because the possession of the land is entirely dependent on this spiritual observance, failing to uphold the agreement carries severe consequences. Breaking this condition inevitably results in the loss of the national inheritance, leading to exile and the transfer of the land to foreigners [רד״ק, אלשיך].

In recognition of the profound kindness God showed to their ancestors, the descendants bear an obligation to offer Him praise [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Yet, this call to praise extends beyond times of prosperity. Even in periods when the condition has been broken and the nation finds itself in exile, the command to praise God remains a powerful symbol of hope. It serves as a reminder to the people never to despair, carrying an underlying promise of a future redemption brought about by God [אלשיך].
