תהלים, פרק קמ״ד, פסוק א׳

Psalms 144:1Sefaria

After securing his kingdom and achieving peace following victories over internal enemies and the Philistines, King David composed a song of deep thanksgiving [רד״ק, מאירי]. Filled with relief upon reaching his ultimate goal, he expresses profound gratitude to God for His constant guidance. Looking beyond his own life, David asks for open miracles that will cause the nations of the world to revere God, and he offers prayers regarding the future hardships of exile [מלבי״ם, מאירי].

David blesses God, referring to Him as a rock. The commentators agree this imagery means that God is the true source of David's power and might. David openly declares that his military successes do not come from his own physical abilities. Instead, it is God who trains him and teaches him the tactics of combat [מאירי, מצודת דוד]. This divine instruction was a deliberate, guided process. God intentionally led David to face the lion and the bear to prepare him for his fateful battle with Goliath. During that encounter, David used smooth stones corresponding to the number of his fingers, an experience that taught him to rely entirely on God for all his future conflicts [אלשיך].

Regarding the physical skills required for these battles, the primary approach among commentators is that the references to different parts of the hand are simply poetic repetition, meant to reinforce the general idea of going to war [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. However, another perspective identifies a precise tactical distinction between different types of combat. One form involves close quarters, hand-to-hand struggle, which demands the raw power of the hands. A second form involves fighting from a distance, such as shooting arrows, which requires careful training, exact precision, and the delicate skill of the fingers [מלבי״ם].
