וּֽבְחַסְדְּךָ֮ תַּצְמִ֢ית אֹ֫יְבָ֥י וְֽ֭הַאֲבַדְתָּ כׇּל־צֹרְרֵ֣י נַפְשִׁ֑י כִּ֝֗י אֲנִ֣י עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ {פ}

A person surrounded by threats often turns to their deepest relationships for protection. In moments of danger, a plea for rescue is not merely a request for a personal favor, but an appeal based on an exclusive bond with the Creator. The expectation of safety stems directly from the commitment of a servant to a master.

When asking God to eliminate these threats, the appeal relies on His divine kindness. This kindness is focused entirely on the individual in danger [אבן עזרא], resulting in the complete removal and eradication of those who wish harm [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

There is a fundamental difference between the types of threats a person faces [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. The first type consists of physical enemies who threaten the body. For these adversaries, direct physical destruction is not necessarily required. If God simply shows open and obvious favor to His servant, the sheer sight of this goodness will shock and silence the attackers. The second type involves spiritual enemies that harass the soul and actively prevent a person from doing God's will. Because these spiritual threats pose a deeper danger, an indirect defeat is not enough. They require complete and absolute destruction [אלשיך].

The foundation for all these requests rests on the individual's identity as a servant of God. This relationship operates on several levels. In a practical sense, just as a master is obligated to protect a servant and rescue them from attackers, a person under God's care rightfully asks for His defense [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On a level of faith, this identity highlights a sharp contrast: the servant remains devoted to God alone, while the enemies lack this faith [רד״ק, מאירי]. Ultimately, because spiritual enemies actively block a person from serving the Creator, their destruction is completely necessary. They must be removed precisely so the servant can fulfill their duty to God without any interference [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].
