Psalms 18:2Sefaria

King David expresses a profound, unbreakable bond with the Creator, declaring his total devotion and recognizing that all of his personal strength comes entirely from above. The primary approach among commentators is that David is declaring a deep, affectionate love for God Reaching this profound love is the ultimate spiritual goal a person can achieve in this world. It is a level that follows the fear of heaven, representing a pure service of God driven solely by love, completely free from any desire for personal reward [רד״ק].

Alternatively, this expression of devotion can be understood as a direct plea for God's mercy Taking a more philosophical view, another perspective notes that God does not experience human emotional reactions. Therefore, David is actually saying that his positive actions will cause God to act with the trait of mercy. It is human behavior that draws out divine mercy, rather than it being a spontaneous emotional response from the Creator [מלבי״ם].

David continues by identifying God as the ultimate source of human power and might The pairing of these concepts reveals a deep truth about human nature and the struggle against negative desires. On their own, a person simply does not have the power to overcome their inner battles and reach the ultimate spiritual peak of loving God. Heavenly assistance is essential. David acknowledges that his very ability to love God is only possible because God grants him the strength and support needed to purify his heart and love Him truly [אלשיך].
