תהלים, פרק י״ח, פסוק ל״ב

Psalms 18:32Sefaria

Recognizing the absolute, exclusive power of God is the foundation of human security in the world. There is no other entity capable of providing genuine protection or standing against His will. He is the ultimate rock and fortress of strength, and there is no source of power besides Him [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. Because His authority is absolute, no force can prevent Him from fulfilling His word [אבן עזרא], and there is no higher power to whom one can appeal or protest His actions [מצודת דוד]. Consequently, anyone who takes shelter in Him receives complete protection, even during times of intense hardship and war. God alone grants bravery and keeps a person safe from harm [ביאור שטיינזלץ, רד״ק]. This recognition of His unmatched power mirrors the classic declaration asking who is like God among the mighty [מאירי].

Understanding this divine protection reveals two distinct ways God interacts with humanity. On a universal scale, He acts as the Creator and the general ruler of the entire world. Yet, He also provides a private, specialized care tailored directly to individuals based on their personal actions [מלבי״ם].

This layered approach to divine guidance creates a complex reality regarding personal security and the downfall of enemies. A person might assume that a wicked enemy is automatically doomed by God's strict justice. However, divine justice is never completely separated from divine mercy. An enemy might still receive mercy because of a single good trait they possess. Furthermore, a person is warned never to trust entirely in their own strength or past success, viewing themselves as an unshakable rock. Human beings are always prone to making mistakes, and a sin can easily strip away their advantages and reverse their good fortune. Therefore, the proper path is never to rely merely on personal confidence or the assumed weakness of an enemy, but to live with simple integrity and place complete trust in God [אלשיך].
