תהלים, פרק י״ח, פסוק כ״ג

Psalms 18:23Sefaria

כִּ֣י כׇל־מִשְׁפָּטָ֣יו לְנֶגְדִּ֑י וְ֝חֻקֹּתָ֗יו לֹא־אָסִ֥יר מֶֽנִּי׃

A life of total devotion requires a constant, unbroken awareness of divine instruction. A person striving for this spiritual height keeps God's laws present at every moment, guarding against wrongdoing with unwavering focus. The primary approach among commentators is that this represents a state of perpetual remembrance. A devoted individual places God's instructions directly in their line of sight, remaining deeply aware of them and actively avoiding sin without ever letting these principles slip from memory. They are a constant guide, never removed from one's personal focus [מצודת ציון].

Within this constant awareness, a profound distinction exists regarding the nature of different divine commands. Some instructions are entirely rational. These are logical, practical rules of behavior that human reason alone would naturally demand [מלבי״ם, מאירי, אלשיך]. On the other hand, there are statutes whose underlying reasons remain hidden, completely beyond the grasp of human intellect [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Alternatively, these hidden statutes can be understood as foundational matters of faith, such as the creation of the world, the reality of miracles, and the concepts of reward and punishment [מאירי].

This distinction reveals a deep and surprising dynamic in how a person relates to God's commands. One might naturally expect to feel a closer, more internal connection to the laws that make logical sense. However, the ideal spiritual attitude operates in reverse. A person fulfills the logical rules not because their own intellect dictates them, but purely because God commanded them. Therefore, these rational laws are viewed as an external authority standing in front of the individual, guiding them from the outside. Conversely, the hidden, unexplainable statutes are embraced with such complete faith that they become deeply internalized. They take root so firmly in the heart and soul that they feel as natural as the rational laws. Because of this profound internal bond, the individual refuses to ever separate from these hidden statutes, holding them as an inseparable part of their very being [מלבי״ם].
