תהלים, פרק י״ח, פסוק כ״ז

Psalms 18:27Sefaria

עִם־נָבָ֥ר תִּתְבָּרָ֑ר וְעִם־עִ֝קֵּ֗שׁ תִּתְפַּתָּֽל׃

God's interaction with the world operates on a profound principle of measure for measure, where His treatment of a person perfectly mirrors that individual's own behavior and character traits. When someone is loyal [רש״י], clean, innocent, and clear in their intentions [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד], the divine response matches this purity. The primary approach among commentators is that God interacts with such an individual in an equally pure manner, directly rewarding them for their good actions and honest conduct.

Conversely, a person who chooses a crooked path experiences a very different reality [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. Pharaoh serves as the classic historical example of someone who acted with such deceit [רש״י]. The primary approach among commentators is that God responds to the wicked by acting in seemingly twisting ways, ultimately bringing the consequences of their own crooked behavior down upon them. Another perspective suggests that God simply abandons the wicked, leaving them completely trapped in their own distorted state [מאירי].

Beyond simply mirroring human behavior, the divine response to wickedness can also take the form of an active struggle. In this view, God actively fights against the wicked person until He achieves total victory over them [אבן עזרא]. This dynamic also translates into a practical lesson for human self-defense. When a deceitful person seeks to take your life, you must respond with cunning and strike first, fulfilling the principle that if someone comes to kill you, you must act early to defeat them [אלשיך].
