זֶ֭ה דּ֣וֹר דֹּרְשָׁ֑ו מְבַקְשֵׁ֨י פָנֶ֖יךָ יַעֲקֹ֣ב סֶֽלָה׃

After establishing a strict moral standard for those worthy of ascending the holy mountain and standing in God's presence, a reassuring answer emerges. Such a group does indeed exist. This high spiritual achievement is not reserved only for a few rare individuals, but characterizes an entire generation dedicated to seeking closeness to God. These are the people whose actions are completely pure and clean [רש״י]. Historically, some commentators identify this specific era as the generation that built the First Temple during the reign of King Solomon [רד״ק, אבן עזרא].

This group possesses a unique balance. The generation operates as one unified whole walking in God's path, while simultaneously being composed of many distinct, righteous individuals [רד״ק, מנחת שי]. As the focus shifts into a direct address to God [רד״ק, אבן עזרא], the nation's forefather, Jacob, is brought into the narrative. The primary approach among commentators is that his name serves as a synonym for the entire nation of Israel. It is his descendants who seek God's presence and are ultimately worthy to enter the Temple.

Other viewpoints explore deeper reasons for this specific connection to Jacob. One perspective suggests that this generation elevated itself to the spiritual level of their ancestor. Just as Jacob once envisioned a ladder connecting heaven and earth, an entire generation has now managed to climb that same spiritual ladder [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, the people lean on the merit of Jacob to stand confidently in judgment [תורה תמימה]. They pray that the Temple will remain standing forever on his account, since his spiritual inheritance and merit are considered eternal and unbroken [אלשיך].

Alternatively, it represents eternity and unlimited time, meaning forever [מצודת דוד, מאירי, אלשיך].
