תהלים, פרק כ״ו, פסוק ד׳

Psalms 26:4Sefaria

לֹֽא־יָ֭שַׁבְתִּי עִם־מְתֵי־שָׁ֑וְא וְעִ֥ם נַ֝עֲלָמִ֗ים לֹ֣א אָבֽוֹא׃

Achieving spiritual perfection and surviving moral tests requires more than just a private, internal struggle against negative desires. It demands a conscious, active distancing from harmful social influences. Choosing to avoid the company of those who might cause one to stumble is a fundamental condition for staying on the path of uprightness [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].

A clear choice must be made to stay away from people of falsehood and emptiness who walk in the opposite direction of truth [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These individuals are sometimes understood as people who waste their time on worldly vanities rather than spiritual study [אלשיך]. Alternatively, they are viewed as heretics who speak out against the Torah and actively incite others against serving God [מאירי, מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that avoiding their company is a strictly defensive measure, ensuring one does not accidentally learn from their destructive words and actions.

Beyond avoiding overt wrongdoers, there is a commitment to stay away from those whose flaws are concealed. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to individuals who commit their sins in secret, hiding their true actions from the public eye. This idea takes on a sharper focus when understood as a reference to hypocrites, wicked individuals who pretend to be righteous and pious on the outside while keeping their true, corrupt nature hidden from the world [מאירי]. Another perspective suggests these are simply people whose character and intentions are unclear; they are avoided to remove even the slightest doubt or risk of a moral stumbling block [אלשיך].

Other interpretations focus on different aspects of these obscure individuals. They might be people completely consumed by the physical desires and pleasures of this world [מלבי״ם], or perhaps individuals who treat life lightly, loving mockery and ridicule [אבן עזרא]. To complete this total separation, a firm commitment is made to never enter their circles or visit the hidden places where they operate [רש״י, רד״ק].
