תהלים, פרק ה׳, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 5:3Sefaria

When a person faces overwhelming distress, the immediate reaction is a desperate plea for salvation. This cry stems from a profound sense of absolute dependence on God, expressing a deep need for mercy in the midst of trouble [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. The petitioner asks God to incline His ear and pay close attention [רד״ק, מאירי, מצודת ציון], hoping for a profound level of listening that spans even great distances [מלבי״ם].

In the human realm, a person seeking justice must navigate a divided system. Someone crying out for help might first approach a king, who then redirects them to a judge to determine the law. Once the judge makes a ruling, the case returns to the king, who holds the executive power to enforce the decision. Approaching God, however, is entirely different, as He embodies both roles simultaneously. He is the sovereign King with ultimate power, and He is the righteous Judge who delivers the innocent from those seeking to do harm [מלבי״ם, רד״ק]. The request for God to listen to the spoken cry also carries a deeper plea. It is a hope that God will accept the words uttered by the mouth and grant the request, even if the person's inner thoughts and intentions fall short of the strict demands of divine justice [אלשיך].

Ultimately, this appeal is rooted in exclusive trust. Prayer and hope are directed toward God alone, completely rejecting any reliance on human assistance, earthly intermediaries, or alternative saviors. Because of this unwavering confidence, the petitioner expects God to respond with kindness. Just as a human king leans in to hear a loyal servant who trusts him completely, God is expected to hear and answer this solitary plea [מצודת דוד].
