תהלים, פרק ה׳, פסוק ט׳

Psalms 5:9Sefaria

In times of conflict and struggle, a person faces more than just external physical threats; there is a profound danger of moral and spiritual confusion. The chaos of battle makes it incredibly difficult to know how to act correctly, creating a deep need for divine assistance to maintain honesty and goodness [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A person in this situation prays for God's help to walk in the path of charity, justice, and Torah, deeply wanting to avoid any sin or error [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Beyond a general plea for spiritual direction in times of uncertainty [מלבי״ם], there is a heavy moral fear that accompanies the reality of war. Even when fighting in justified self-defense, a person prays that God will guide him so that he does not sin by shedding the blood of innocent people caught within the enemy camp [אלשיך].

The adversaries faced in such moments are not merely rivals on a battlefield. They are hostile observers watching from afar with an evil eye. They count every step the person takes, eagerly waiting for a misstep. Their ultimate hope is that the person will betray God and sin, allowing them to rejoice in his downfall and claim the upper hand [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators is that the person asks to walk a straight and moral path specifically to deny these waiting enemies the malicious joy of seeing him fail. However, another perspective suggests that the enemies themselves are the very reason divine help is necessary in the first place. The constant burdens of war and the ongoing struggle against adversaries completely drain the mental and emotional energy required to serve God. Therefore, the prayer is a plea for God to help the person avoid despair and prevent him from sinking entirely into the immediate, material concerns of survival [מאירי].

After asking God to teach the right way to act, the plea concludes with a request for God to make His path straight. This is an appeal for God to actively clear the road ahead of obstacles, distractions, and material desires, paving the way even before the person takes his first step [מלבי״ם].
