Psalms 5:10Sefaria

Enemies do not always attack openly; often, their most dangerous assault comes wrapped in deep hypocrisy, turning the very organs of speech into a deadly trap. Among these adversaries, not a single word of truth or honesty can be found The primary approach among commentators is that these individuals are constant liars. Outwardly, they present themselves as loving and loyal friends, but in reality, they are dangerous rivals whose words can never be trusted. The contrast between their outward appearance and their hidden reality is stark. Deep within their hearts, they harbor nothing but destruction, harm, and evil plots. While they speak words of peace, they secretly plan deceit and disaster

To illustrate the severity of this danger, a vivid picture is drawn using the anatomy of speech. These adversaries use soft, smooth talk to disarm their targets. Their ultimate desire is to swallow their victims whole, whether by destroying them physically or by stealing their property and hard work, much like an open grave consumes the dead The different parts of the mouth work together as a complete system designed to bring down the victim. One approach views this as a slippery slope into a trap. The mouth represents outward speech, while the tongue reflects calculated internal planning. The flattering tongue acts as a dark, slippery path. When an unwary person is tempted by these smooth words, they slip on the tongue and fall into the throat, which acts as the open grave. From there, they plunge straight into the enemy's core, a place of total ruin [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. This level of malice is not driven by a passing urge, but by cold, calculated intellect aimed entirely at corruption [מלבי״ם].

Alternatively, another perspective flips this imagery, focusing on the foul stench that naturally rises from a grave. Just as an uncovered grave inevitably releases the smell of decay, the throat of such corrupt individuals should logically emit the evil stored in their hearts. However, the smooth tongue serves as a mask to cover up this internal rot. By using soft, gentle speech, they successfully hide their true intentions. As a result, their deep-seated evil and unfaithfulness are rarely exposed, appearing only occasionally as if let slip by accident [אלשיך].
