תהלים, פרק ס״ח, פסוק ד׳

Psalms 68:4Sefaria

The presence of God operates in a profoundly dual manner within the world. The same divine power that brings destruction and melts away the wicked serves as a source of immense happiness and healing for the righteous. These righteous individuals represent the people of Israel, whether referring specifically to the men of David [אבן עזרא], or to King Hezekiah and the Israelites [רד״ק].

Their experience of happiness is profound and multi-layered. The primary approach among commentators is that the varied descriptions of joy highlight its overwhelming intensity and abundance [רד״ק]. However, there is a fine distinction between the different layers of this emotion. One aspect captures an internal, spiritual happiness, often rooted in rejoicing in God [מלבי״ם], or simply reflecting a general state of gladness [מצודת ציון]. Another aspect represents the outward expression of this feeling—the visible signs and cheers that broadcast the inner joy to the world [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. Naturally, this outward display of happiness leads directly into singing praises to God [רש״י].

This intense joy takes place specifically before the aspect of God that represents strict justice. Remarkably, the righteous have the ability to transform this strict justice into mercy. Their happiness stems, in part, from witnessing the downfall of the enemies who are driven away by God. They are not considered sinful for rejoicing over the ruin of the wicked; instead, they fully delight in it.

Furthermore, because of a future state of spiritual perfection, this happiness will be entirely pure. In ordinary circumstances, a person is expected to temper their joy with a sense of fear, lest overwhelming happiness lead to careless sin. However, in this elevated state, the righteous will be able to experience complete joy without any underlying fear [אלשיך].
