תהלים, פרק ס״ח, פסוק כ״ט

Psalms 68:29Sefaria

A dramatic shift in voice occurs as a firm declaration to a nation transforms into a direct, heartfelt plea to God. Initially, the message is directed either at the people of Israel as a whole or specifically toward a royal leader, such as King Hezekiah [רד״ק] or King David [אבן עזרא, אלשיך]. The central idea is a vital reminder that God has already decreed and granted them strength, victory, and sovereignty. The nation and its leaders must acknowledge that their worldly achievements are never the product of their own independent abilities, but stem entirely from God's will and command [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

Following this declaration, the focus turns upward in a prayer asking God to actively reveal His might and bring justice upon their enemies [רש״י, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This call for divine strength [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם] carries profound implications about how God's power operates across time and history. One perspective suggests that the very same divine might God displayed during great historical miracles, such as the splitting of the Red Sea, remains ready and waiting to bring about the ultimate future redemption [מצודת דוד].

Other interpretations offer a more personal or spiritual focus regarding this request for divine action. The prayer can be seen as a deep expression of King David's humility. By setting aside his own royal authority, he declares that the true focus is never his personal power, but rather God's ability to redeem the Divine Presence from exile, knowing that God's salvation inherently guarantees the salvation of Israel [אלשיך]. Alternatively, this call for strength is understood as an appeal to the divine power radiating outward from the Temple in Jerusalem. It is this immense spiritual force that ultimately compels foreign kings to surrender their pride and bring offerings to God [מלבי״ם].
