תהלים, פרק ס״ח, פסוק ל״ג

Psalms 68:33Sefaria

מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָ֭אָרֶץ שִׁ֣ירוּ לֵאלֹהִ֑ים זַמְּר֖וּ אֲדֹנָ֣י סֶֽלָה׃

A universal invitation is extended to the world, stirring the hearts of all nations to sing and offer praise to God [מאירי]. The exact identity of these earthly kingdoms is viewed from several perspectives. They may represent delegates from every corner of the globe gathered together [רד״ק], or they might be the specific nations that were subject to King David and paid him tribute [אבן עזרא]. Another perspective suggests that this call is directed toward the very empires that oppressed the Israelites throughout history [אלשיך].

The motivation behind this unified song is a clear recognition of God's greatness and the realization that He has redeemed His people [רש״י]. This praise will ultimately break forth at the exact moment the authority of the violent, oppressing nations is shattered [מצודת דוד].

On a deeper level, addressing these nations carries a profound theological message. The call to sing to God invokes the specific aspect of divine strict justice. This is meant to clarify to the oppressing empires that their dominance does not come from higher spiritual forces or celestial powers, but solely from God. He alone decreed judgment and hardship upon the Israelites because of their sins. If these nations recognize that they are merely instruments executing His will, and if they choose not to make their oppression unnecessarily cruel, they will earn a place in the ultimate future. In that time, God will willingly accept their offerings, and they will be able to continue singing His praises forever [אלשיך].
