תהלים, פרק פ״ה, פסוק ז׳

Psalms 85:7Sefaria

הֲֽלֹא־אַ֭תָּה תָּשׁ֣וּב תְּחַיֵּ֑נוּ וְ֝עַמְּךָ֗ יִשְׂמְחוּ־בָֽךְ׃

A profound hope for redemption and national revival arises from a harsh and difficult reality, directed entirely toward God. The people call for a renewed relationship and a divine return that will ultimately lead to great joy. The primary approach among commentators is that this plea serves as a deep expectation for salvation from severe troubles. The exile of the Israelites is viewed as a state of death, making the request essentially a plea for resurrection from the lifelessness of that exile [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מאירי].

This appeal highlights God's absolute exclusivity. The nation fully recognizes that there is no other power capable of bringing them back to life and redeeming them besides Him [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. Furthermore, this revival is not merely a hopeful wish, but a guaranteed process that will certainly come to pass, as God has already promised it to His people through the prophets [רש״י]. Building on this certainty, there is a perspective that views this redemption almost as an obligation resting upon God to return and breathe life back into His nation [מאירי].

The ultimate result of this transformative process is a profound national happiness. The future joy of the people will stem directly from the very fact that God has returned to them, saving them from their suffering and bringing an end to their troubles [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
