God is the absolute ruler over the mightiest forces of nature, yet He remains intimately involved in the finest details of human life. He commands opposing forces in the physical world: the mountains, which are strong, fixed, and visible, alongside the wind, an invisible force powerful enough to shatter those solid peaks [אבן עזרא, רד״ק]. This highlights a distinction in the creative process itself—bringing the invisible wind into existence from nothing, while shaping the mountains from existing earth [מלבי״ם]. Yet, the very Creator of the universe's most massive elements is deeply attentive to the smallest, most intimate moments of human existence [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This intimate attention means God knows every hidden thought and action. The primary approach among commentators is that God tracks every deed and spoken word, presenting them to a person—even their most casual conversations—at the end of their life [רש״י, מנחת שי]. This reality shatters the illusion of heretics who believe God is blind to their actions, as He actively exposes them through the warnings of His prophets [רד״ק]. His awareness extends beyond intentional speech, capturing every slip of the tongue and unconscious emotional reaction [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, a different perspective suggests that this communication works in the opposite direction, with God revealing His own divine plans and future actions to humanity [אבן עזרא].

Just as God controls creation, He has the power to unravel its order, turning the bright morning light into deep darkness. On a physical level, this can manifest as a solar eclipse [רד״ק], effectively undoing the primordial light created at the dawn of time [מלבי״ם]. On a moral level, this darkness represents the sudden downfall of the wicked, whose success and light are transformed into trouble and gloom [רש״י]. In a unique moral interpretation, this reversal applies to the sin of gossip; a person who slanders another loses their own bright merits, absorbing the dark sins of their victim in exchange [חומת אנך].

God's absolute dominance is further seen as He tramples the high places of the earth. Physically, He can sink the tallest mountains back into the ocean's depths [מלבי״ם], but symbolically, this represents His humbling of the arrogant and haughty [רש״י, מצודת דוד, חומת אנך]. All of these sweeping actions are possible because God commands both the heavenly and earthly realms, doing exactly as He desires [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Ultimately, recognizing this immense power is a profound call to reflection and change. Because God can so easily turn light into darkness and reshape the world, a person who improves their ways can trust that God has the equal power to overturn harsh decrees and transform them into good [אבן עזרא, רד״ק].
