לֹ֤א תִלְבַּשׁ֙ שַֽׁעַטְנֵ֔ז צֶ֥מֶר וּפִשְׁתִּ֖ים יַחְדָּֽו׃ {ס}

Human clothing serves a far greater purpose than simply providing warmth and physical cover. It carries profound historical, spiritual, and symbolic meaning. Setting a clear boundary in the material world, the Torah restricts the combination of certain materials whose union either carries a negative historical charge or is exclusively reserved for holy service. The primary focus of this restriction is the actual act of wearing the garment. The limitation applies specifically when a person puts on the clothing and derives physical comfort and benefit from it in a normal manner [הטור הארוך, תורה תמימה, רלב״ג, מלבי״ם, ביאור יש״ר]. This encompasses both the initial act of wrapping oneself in the garment and the continued state of wearing it [הכתב והקבלה].

The prohibition is highly specific regarding both the materials involved and the method of their combination. It applies exclusively to the mixture of wool and linen [ביאור יש״ר]. Furthermore, the wool must come naturally from sheep, entirely excluding the hair of other animals such as camels, goats, or rabbits [הכתב והקבלה, תורה תמימה, רלב״ג]. The forbidden mixture involves three stages of textile preparation: combing and smoothing the fibers, spinning the threads, and finally weaving or twining them together [רש״י, העמק דבר, מזרחי]. Commentators debate the exact nature of this mixture. Some argue that the restriction only applies to fabrics that have undergone the complete process of spinning and weaving, thereby exempting pressed fibers like felt [שפתי חכמים]. Others maintain that any substantial physical connection, including felt, is forbidden [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the materials must be physically joined, whether through a shared weave, tying, or sewing with at least two stitches [העמק דבר, מזרחי, תורה תמימה, שטיינזלץ]. The severity of this physical union is such that even a single thread of wool woven into a linen garment disqualifies the entire piece of clothing [רלב״ג]. However, a person is completely permitted to wear two separate garments layered over one another, such as a wool coat placed over a linen shirt, because the materials remain structurally independent [רבנו בחיי, נתינה לגר, מלבי״ם].

Beyond the physical details, this separation holds deep historical and spiritual significance. On a historical level, the union of wool and linen recalls the tragic story of Cain and Abel. Cain brought an offering from the flax seed, which produces linen, while Abel brought wool from the firstborn of his flock. Combining the offering of the sinner with the offering of the innocent is forbidden, as their original encounter brought hatred and bloodshed into the world [פני דוד, הרא״ש, הדר זקנים, דעת זקנים, חזקוני, שפתי כהן]. In the realm of holy service, the garments of the priests and the curtain in the Tabernacle were intentionally crafted from a mixture of wool and linen. An ordinary person is prevented from creating a personal replica of these holy objects, ensuring that the king's scepter is not used for mundane, everyday purposes [הרא״ש, פענח רזא, דעת זקנים, חזקוני, בכור שור]. The only exception to this rule is the Commandment of the fringes, where the mixture is permitted for the blue thread precisely because the garment is worn for the sake of fulfilling a Commandment [פענח רזא, רלב״ג, תורה תמימה].

Conceptually, avoiding this mixture served to distance the Israelites from the practices of idol-worshipping priests, who commonly wore such blended garments [רלב״ג]. On a deeply personal and symbolic level, the deliberate separation within one's clothing acts as a constant reminder of internal balance. It prompts a person to distinguish between their animalistic, instinctual nature, represented by the wool, and their vegetative, survival-driven side, represented by the linen. By keeping these forces distinct, a person can properly channel and subordinate both aspects of their character to the service of God [רש״ר הירש].
