פרשת נצבים

Deuteronomy 30:17Sefaria

Spiritual life is never static. A person is always in motion, and the failure to climb higher inevitably results in a downward fall. This downward trajectory represents the exact opposite of life and goodness, embodying instead the concepts of evil [רש״י] and death [מלבי״ם].

The collapse begins entirely within. It starts in the heart, which serves as the primary engine driving all human action [אבן עזרא]. This internal shift involves distancing oneself from the people of God [ביאור יש״ר]. Interestingly, this turning away does not usually begin with outright rebellion. After being exposed to clear warnings and promises, it is difficult to imagine a person choosing to sin deliberately. Rather, the decline begins quietly, born of simple distraction and the gradual emptying of the heart from spiritual teachings [רש ר הירש, שפתי כהן].

Once a person stops making an effort to review and engage with their learning, they lose the capacity to absorb spiritual wisdom altogether [תורה תמימה, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There is no neutral ground. If an individual does not actively push their heart toward the positive extreme of loving God, they will eventually find themselves sliding toward the darkest negative extreme [העמק דבר].

This initial lack of attention creates an opening for negative urges to deceive the individual. What follows is a slow drift away from the straight path [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Pushed and driven by their own desires, the person becomes trapped. A minor misstep drags them into more severe wrongs, as one failure inevitably leads to another, eventually stripping away their ability to observe the Commandments [שפתי כהן]. Ultimately, what begins as a minor lapse in focus ends in the deepest spiritual abyss. The subtle turning of the heart concludes in the worship of foreign gods, leaving the person in a state of total loss and absolute rejection of faith [רש ר הירש, שפתי כהן].
