Ecclesiastes 9:9Sefaria

Finding meaning, happiness, and stability in a temporary world requires holding onto deep connections, whether human, practical, or spiritual. These bonds provide a pause of comfort in a life of hard work and give lasting value to a person's days. The primary approach among commentators focuses on the simple, everyday reality of finding joy and peace with a spouse. A life filled with sorrow and arguments is not truly living [מצודת דוד]. Even if a person's existence feels ordinary and lacks grand significance, he should find happiness in his simple, reasonable lot, as this is his purpose and the earthly reward for his efforts [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The bond of marriage is considered so vital that living without a partner is likened to existing without life itself. This idea is expressed cautiously: while a bad marriage can make life bitter, the complete absence of a spouse is a definite lack of life [תורה תמימה]. Furthermore, life in this context represents joy and spiritual uplift, which are particularly felt during the Jewish holidays. Because of this deep connection, a person whose spouse passes away is expected to wait through three major festivals before remarrying, allowing time to process the loss of that shared joy [תורה תמימה].

Beyond the literal family unit, a group of commentators views the spouse as a metaphor for the Torah or a practical trade. This educational perspective encourages learning a profession to earn a living while simultaneously studying the Torah. Balancing practical work with spiritual study keeps a person away from sin and secures his reward both in this world and the next [רש״י, תורה תמימה, צאינה וראינה]. The Torah is compared to a beloved partner because the more a person engages with it, the more fresh and satisfying meaning he discovers [תורה תמימה]. However, another viewpoint suggests that if a person devotes himself entirely to studying the Torah for its own sake, God will directly provide his livelihood and honor, granting him eternal life [נחל אשכול].

On a deeper philosophical level, the marital bond symbolizes the relationship between the soul and the physical body it chooses to inhabit. A person's task is to elevate his physical existence by guiding it with the teachings of the Torah. While human days are naturally limited and temporary [מצודת דוד], righteous individuals can breathe true vitality into them. By making the right choices, they transform fleeting moments into eternal life in a world of ultimate good [תעלומות חכמה]. A further mystical interpretation sees the partner as a representation of the higher soul. A person is challenged to reach a state of spiritual perfection where he connects with this higher soul during his physical lifetime. When this is achieved, even ordinary daily work keeps him closely attached to God. At this elevated level, the bond is so intense that God desires the person and becomes his ultimate portion [אלשיך].
