Ecclesiastes 9:8Sefaria

בְּכׇל־עֵ֕ת יִהְי֥וּ בְגָדֶ֖יךָ לְבָנִ֑ים וְשֶׁ֖מֶן עַל־רֹאשְׁךָ֥ אַל־יֶחְסָֽר׃

The imagery of white clothing and fragrant oil presents a dual guide for living, balancing physical enjoyment with constant spiritual readiness. The primary approach among commentators divides this guidance into two paths: the literal and the symbolic. On a literal level, this is an encouragement to enjoy the physical pleasures of this world and be happy with one's lot [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The white garments simply refer to nice, clean, and simple clothing, while the oil represents grooming and physical delight.

However, a deeper, symbolic interpretation takes these images into the realm of spirit and morality. This shift is driven by the understanding that if the focus were solely on physical wealth, other nations possess plenty of fine clothes and oils as well. Therefore, the imagery must serve as a hint to Commandments and good deeds [תורה תמימה]. Following this path, the call is for a person to be ready at all times to stand before the Creator in complete repentance, as no one knows the day of their death. This is compared to a guest invited to a royal feast without a set time. A wise person will immediately clean his clothes and prepare, ensuring he is completely ready the moment he is called to the palace [רש״י, תורה תמימה].

Within this symbolic framework, the white garments take on several spiritual meanings. They represent the need to maintain a pure soul [תורה תמימה] and to ensure one's actions remain unsoiled by the stains of sin [אבן עזרא, תורה תמימה]. Alternatively, the white clothing serves as a metaphor for the physical body itself. The body acts as the garment of the soul and must be refined through the performance of Commandments [תעלומות חכמה]. On a more practical level, this imagery is also seen as a hint to the physical Commandment of wearing the white threads of the fringes [תורה תמימה].

Similarly, the oil upon the head carries profound spiritual weight. It is viewed as the symbol of a good reputation [אבן עזרא] or as an abundance of Commandments and good deeds, whose positive influence spreads far and wide like the scent of fine oil [תורה תמימה]. Another perspective sees the oil as an expression of the Divine abundance that shines from God, which will never be lacking from the head of a person who keeps their body pure [תעלומות חכמה]. Finally, much like the fringes, the oil on the head is identified with the Commandment of wearing phylacteries on the head, through which God's name is called upon a person [תורה תמימה].
