פרשת תרומה

Exodus 25:13Sefaria

וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ בַדֵּ֖י עֲצֵ֣י שִׁטִּ֑ים וְצִפִּיתָ֥ אֹתָ֖ם זָהָֽב׃

Moving the holiest object in the Tabernacle required a dedicated method of transport, one that served a practical purpose while carrying profound symbolic meaning. The primary approach among commentators is that this was achieved using long wooden poles or beams [רש״י, ביאור יש״ר, ביאור שטיינזלץ, קאסוטו]. These supports were designed to slide into rings attached to the Ark and rest on the shoulders of the carriers whenever it was time to travel [קאסוטו]. Offering a slightly different perspective, another view describes these poles as branch-like extensions protruding from both sides of the Ark, noting the interesting detail that their exact measurements are never specified [אבן עזרא].

Beyond their physical function, these supports carry a deep message about the relationship between the Torah and those who uphold it. Because the poles are never allowed to be removed from the Ark, they represent the eternal covenant of Torah study. They serve as a reminder of the promise God made, ensuring that the Torah will never depart from the mouths of the Israelites [כלי יקר].

From a social and economic standpoint, the carrying poles symbolize the financial backers of Torah scholars. The fixed rings on the Ark represent individuals who remain stationary, sitting constantly with the scholars and providing for their daily, immediate needs. In contrast, the mobile poles represent those engaged in business and commerce. Much like the historical arrangement where the tribe of Zebulun supported the scholars of the tribe of Issachar, these business people embark on long journeys to earn a living and fund those who study. Even though they are constantly moving along the roads, their bond with the Torah remains steady and unbroken. Just as the poles never leave the Ark, these supporters never detach from the Torah [שפתי כהן].
