פרשת תרומה

Exodus 25:1Sefaria

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

The command to build the Tabernacle acts as a vital bridge between the awe-inspiring events at Mount Sinai and the long journey ahead in the desert. God speaks to Moses while he is still standing on the mountain [אבן עזרא, קאסוטו]. Following the giving of the Torah and the forming of a new covenant, the Israelites have reached a state of holiness, making them fully ready to host the Divine presence in their midst [רמב״ן, שד״ל].

A profound question arises regarding this project: why would an infinite God, who is not bound by space, require a physical structure? The primary approach among commentators is that the Tabernacle provides a tangible symbol of God's constant presence and watchful care over the camp. Its very existence is meant to uproot the false belief that God has abandoned the earthly world and no longer watches over it [אברבנאל]. Moreover, the structure is designed to preserve the Mount Sinai experience on a permanent basis. The Divine glory that was revealed openly on the mountain will now dwell quietly within the Tabernacle, accompanying the people on all their travels [רמב״ן, קאסוטו].

This mobile sanctuary also serves to strengthen national unity and devotion to the Torah well before the Israelites enter their homeland, allowing their spiritual center to journey right alongside them [שד״ל]. Additionally, it establishes a permanent meeting place for communication between God and Moses. Moses will no longer need to climb a mountain to hear God speak. Instead, the Divine voice will descend from heaven into the Tabernacle, speaking to him from between the two cherubim on the Ark [אבן עזרא, רמב״ן, אברבנאל].

The physical design of the Tabernacle and its vessels is not random; it closely parallels the structure of reality and the higher spiritual worlds [רלב״ג, קאסוטו]. To guarantee absolute precision, God presented Moses with a tangible, prophetic vision of the heavenly Tabernacle while he was still on Mount Sinai, instructing him to copy it exactly in the earthly realm [אברבנאל, קאסוטו]. Alongside this cosmic significance, the building holds a deeply personal and moral message. The physical command to construct the sanctuary is ultimately a call for every person to build a resting place for God within the chambers of their own heart [ברכת אשר].
