The golden candelabrum in the Tabernacle is not meant to provide physical light for God, but rather to project spiritual light outward. It stands as a symbol of wisdom, Torah, and the human soul, which naturally reaches upward. Positioned in the southern part of the sanctuary, it directly faces the table, which represents material success and sustenance. This placement highlights a necessary balance: physical abundance is required to support spiritual achievement, demonstrating the essential combination of material sustenance and Torah study.

The requirement to use the absolute purest gold emphasizes the supreme importance of maintaining a pure heart and taking pure actions. By its very nature, the candelabrum represents flawless purity, and it shines properly only when the generation itself is pure in its deeds [העמק דבר]. On a symbolic level, this unblemished gold represents the Oral Torah and intellectual understanding, which must remain completely free from any distortion or flaw [אדרת אליהו, אברבנאל].

The primary approach among commentators is that the entire structure must be formed from a single block of gold. Rather than casting it in a mold or crafting separate pieces to solder together, an artisan must strike the gold with a hammer until the complete shape emerges [רש״י, רשב״ם, בכור שור]. While some commentators maintain that the interior of the structure was hollow [אבן עזרא], others insist it was completely solid throughout [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. This strict requirement to fashion it from a single block symbolizes the underlying unity of Torah and wisdom. Despite the many different facets of wisdom, they all flow from a single Divine source without any true division.

The instructions use a passive phrasing to describe how the candelabrum is to be made, sparking different interpretations. A Midrashic tradition suggests that it was formed miraculously. Moses struggled to grasp exactly how to design it, particularly because its height was not specified. Ultimately, God commanded him to throw the block of gold into the fire, and the fully formed structure emerged on its own [רש״י, ריב״א]. This difficulty arose because spiritual reward and the acquisition of true wisdom exist beyond the limits of human intellect, requiring direct Divine assistance to attain [כלי יקר]. Conversely, those focusing on the plain meaning of the text argue that the passive phrasing simply indicates it should be crafted by a skilled artisan, rejecting the idea of a miraculous formation [אבן עזרא, אברבנאל]. From a practical legal standpoint, this phrasing also teaches that if gold is completely unavailable, the candelabrum may be constructed from simpler metals [אור החיים, רש ר הירש].

The structural foundation consists of a wide base and a central shaft. Some traditions describe the base as a box-like shape supported by three legs [רש״י, רשב״ם], while the main shaft serves as the central pillar from which the other branches extend [רלב״ג]. To beautify the structure, it is adorned with cups, knobs, and flowers. The cups were elongated, and some suggest their practical purpose was to catch dripping oil from the lamps above so nothing would be wasted [חזקוני, בכור שור]. The knobs were round, apple-like protrusions, though one perspective suggests the term actually refers to the specific angles where the branches diverge from the main stem [שד״ל]. The flowers were complete, petal-like designs. Symbolically, the seven branches and their intricate decorations correspond to the seven planets that guide the world, as well as the different layers of creation, including the angelic realm, the heavenly spheres, and the physical earth [רבנו בחיי, תולדות יצחק].

To finalize the design, it is emphasized once again that every single element, from the base to the intricate floral decorations and extending branches, must remain an inseparable part of that original block of pure gold, with no pieces attached or glued from the outside.
