Exodus 25:12Sefaria

Carrying the Ark of the Covenant, the most sacred vessel in the Tabernacle, required a strong and stable physical mechanism to accompany it on its journeys. To achieve this, gold was melted and poured into molds to form carrying rings. These rings were not attached as an afterthought; rather, they were cast as a protruding, integral part of the Ark's body itself [רשב״ם]. This method of casting the gold, rather than hammering it, provided immense strength and durability. Such strength was essential, as the rings had to bear the massive weight of the Ark, the Tablets of the Covenant, and the heavy cover resting on top

The exact placement of these rings is a subject of discussion. The primary approach among commentators is that they were positioned at the corners of the Ark, though opinions differ regarding their exact height. Some suggest the rings were set at the upper corners near the cover, which helped distribute the heavy weight and made it more comfortable to carry Others argue that the rings were attached to the lower corners near the bottom edge. This lower placement ensured that when the priests carried the Ark, it would be hoisted high above their shoulders, a position fitting for the honor of God [רמב״ן, ספורנו].

Alternatively, another approach suggests the Ark featured four short feet to prevent it from resting directly on the ground, thereby avoiding any disrespect. According to this view, the rings were mounted directly onto these feet A third perspective connects the location of the rings to the physical steps taken by the priests. The rings were positioned specifically in the area where the carriers walked, hinting at their unique manner of travel. Out of profound reverence, the priests carried the Ark while keeping their faces turned toward it, ensuring they never turned their backs

The total number of rings also invites varying interpretations. Most commentators agree that there were only four rings in total, with two positioned on each side Conversely, other commentators deduce that the Ark actually had eight rings. In this view, four lower rings were used for the actual physical carrying, while four upper rings served purely as decoration. Another variation of this idea describes a complex system of fixed rings containing movable inner rings, which would lower alongside the carrying poles whenever the Ark came to a rest in the camp

Finally, these rings were firmly set along the long sides of the Ark rather than its width. This lengthwise placement guaranteed a wide distance between the carrying poles. As a result, two priests could comfortably walk side by side between the poles as they carried the Ark during the Israelites' journeys through the desert [ספורנו, רשב״ם].
